Outcomes

Shriners Hospitals for Children, along with the American Burn Association, has participated in a long-standing, unique program in burn outcome research. The study utilizes a parent-/patient-centered outcome assessment model with the main focus on quality of life improvements of the burn patient. Today, survival is expected in most children with a burn covering 90 percent of total body surface area or less.

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Boston is the only exclusively pediatric, verified burn center in the Northeast. Burn center verification is a joint program of the American Burn Association (ABA) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

Infection prevention and control is paramount to any hospital. At the Boston Shriners Hospital our health care associated infections are remarkably low. Our hospital sustained a rate of zero for ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) events since 2012 in our critically ill patients and a rate of zero for surgical site infections (SSI). Despite the fact that many of our patients are admitted with multiple drug resistant organisms (MDROs), we have successfully sustained a rate of zero for cross contaminations in our inpatient units for the past two years.
