Former patient remembers being treated at the old and new Salt Lake City Shriners Hospitals

Hi, my name is Alexandrea. I was a patient at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City 30 years ago. Here is my story.

I was born with a short left femur which was corrected with an external fixator by Dr. Coleman (I still remember his name after all this time) over a period of three years and seven operations. I was in the old hospital on a ward with a wonderful nurse named Veda who did my daily dressing changes over my eight-week stay in 1989. When I was 17, I tore my meniscus on the affected leg and was again welcomed with open arms to the Salt Lake City Shriners Hospital; only this time it was the new hospital with new staff, but the same unbelievable care.

What I will never forget is the love that was shown not only to me, but to my family. I was treated medically and emotionally. The local Shriners in the San Luis Valley, Colorado, flew us to Salt Lake City and provided for us when my parents couldn’t have afforded to do that for me financially.

It’s been 30 years since my first surgery and I’ve come a long way. I played varsity sports in high school and as I’ve gotten older, I still run! I became a registered nurse, believe it or not. My career choice was influenced by all of the staff there at Shriners Hospitals for Children. I know first-hand what people are going through emotionally and often physically. I am married to a wonderful man who is a Colorado State Trooper, and we have three beautiful and kind children. I have told them all how Shriners Hospital will always hold a special place in my heart. We will always do whatever we can to repay Shriners Hospitals for Children for the gift that has been given to me.

My heart is forever grateful and because of Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City, my determination knows no limits. Keep inspiring and loving children!
