Support services

At Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City, care is delivered in a patient/family-centered model, which means the patient and family are the focus. In addition to your medical care, we have the following support services and accommodations.

Play areas

Patients staying at the hospital for long periods of time are scheduled for play as part of their daily routine. Structured and unstructured activities take place in the hospital each day. A child life specialist supervises activities that include everything from cards and video games to our 30-year tradition of Friday night bingo.

Patients and their siblings are welcome to utilize our play areas while at the hospital. On the first floor, the Kid’s Corner is between Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services – West, LLC and the clinic; on the second floor, you cannot miss our central activities area and the outside playground, which can be accessed from the second floor.

Sometimes structured activities are facilitated at the hospital. Activities like our quarterly family fests, arts and crafts, and performing groups are offered to patients and their families. To receive email invitations to these events, subscribe to our e-newsletter

Internet/computer access

There is a computer available for use in the parent lounge for parents or guardians to access the Internet to check email or to surf the Web. WiFi is available for patient families in select areas of the hospital.

Interpreter services

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City offers interpretive services for you and your child. It is vital to ensure that you have accurate information about your child’s care. We have one full-time Spanish interpreter onsite and many departments have at least one Spanish speaker on staff. Interpreters for other languages can be arranged when requested to be present for clinical appointments.

  • Outgoing mail can be dropped off to the front desk.
  • Arrangements can be made through the nursing/materials management department for mailing larger packages.
  • All shipping costs are the responsibility of the parent/patient.
  • Mail received after a patient is discharged will be forwarded to the home address of the patient.

Telephones are available in each patient room. These phones are restricted to incoming calls and local outgoing calls. For the comfort of the other patients, calls are not forwarded to patient rooms after 9 p.m.


The security team at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City provides on-site service 24 hours a day. The security staff will escort you to the parking garage upon request. If you have safety concerns or would like a security escort, please call the security guard at 801-536-3500 or visit the main desk in the hospital lobby.
