Orthotic and Prosthetic Services

Shriners Hospitals for Children’s Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services (POPS), LLC customizes orthotics and prosthetic devices using groundbreaking computer aided design (CAD) technology and state-of-the-art carver (fabrication) machines.

Our orthotists and prosthetists are specially trained to work with children. They understand children's unique needs, and collaborate with physicians and rehabilitation therapists to maximize patient outcomes.

POPS offers a full range of upper and lower extremity orthotics and prosthetics, as well as spinal orthotics and cranial helmets. POPS is a support service that truly sets Shriners Hospitals for Children apart, and empowers pediatric patients with improved mobility, comfort and confidence.

What makes our orthotic and prosthetic services special?

Children living with orthopaedic conditions, such as missing limbs, deserve every opportunity to thrive and participate in desired activities and sports, succeed, and feel confident in their abilities. Our POPS teams help carry out this vision, whether it's creating personalized prosthetics or matching a child to the most effective and least-restrictive assistive device.

One distinct benefit is the speed and accuracy with which Shriners Hospitals for Children’s POPS is able to deliver customized supportive devices. Using the latest technology and software, POPS has forged a new path forward that no longer relies on cumbersome plaster casts and lengthy fabrication times.

Another important aspect of our specialized care is the multidisciplinary approach we embrace in all we do. Crafting the most effective treatment plan for a pediatric patient is a joint effort that involves the family as well as the child's entire health care team. This includes physicians, physical and occupational therapists, prosthetists, orthotists and more.

How does POPS work?

The POPS program allows our specialists to design and customize orthotics and prosthetic devices that are tailored to the unique needs of each patient. Shriners Hospitals for Children exclusively serves growing children, and we're driven to help them optimize their mobility and live as independently as possible.

Leveraging CAD technology

The practitioner uses a light scanner to gather the most accurate measurements and anatomical information needed to build a customized device. From there, they create a computer rendering of the device, then send that data to a Shriners Hospitals for Children Pediatric Orthotics and Prosthetic Services, LLC fabrication team to build a foam model. After that, the device is built and then fitted to the child to ensure optimal comfort and effectiveness. And most importantly, we dedicate one-on-one time with each child, teaching them how to use and care for the device(s).

Shriners Hospitals for Children is invested in all aspects of pediatric health, which includes emotional and psychological well-being. We understand that many of the families we serve are finding their way through complex medical issues. Our highest goal is to help each and every patient live their most enriched life and reach their full potential.
