The health and safety of our patients, families and staff is our highest priority. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is requiring hospitals to meet established criteria as part of the state’s reopening plan. The Springfield Shriners Hospital submitted its Phase 1 attestation on May 29, 2020, its Phase 2 attestation on June 9, 2020, and its Phase 3 attestation on July 8, 2020.

Katherine Moynihan, CCLS

Katherine Moynihan, CCLS, is a certified child life specialist at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Springfield. Kate received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from SUNY Geneseo. After college she worked with at-risk youth in multiple school settings and a therapeutic treatment program. She completed a practicum in child life through Yale New Haven Hospital, mainly supporting patients and families in a hematology/oncology outpatient clinic. Her practicum experience solidified her interest in pursuing child life as a career, so she took additional course work.

Kate completed a 550 hour clinical internship through California Pacific Medical Center where she worked in a neonatal intensive care unit, inpatient pediatric unit, pediatric intensive care unit, outpatient clinic, surgery/radiology procedure unit and the emergency department. She spent two years working as a child life specialist at Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center (ESPC) a sub-acute long-term care facility for medically complex children. At ESPC, Kate was passionate about advocating for family-centered care and was a member of the palliative care committee.

At Shriners Hospitals for Children, Kate works on the surgical inpatient unit, where she prepares kids for their surgeries and provides support pre-operatively and post-operatively as they recover. She works alongside two other child life specialists and assists with managing volunteers, organizing toy donations and supporting patients in other areas of the hospital including outpatient, pediatric orthotics and prosthetics, and radiology.
